In this project, students in the GWSS/GLBT 3404 Transnational Sexualities (Topic: Queer Memory Work: Temporalities, Places, Struggles) explored the queer and ethnic past and present of the Twin Cities during the Spring of 2023 and designed a memory walk as a final product. They focus on the ‘memory walk’ as a critical methodology whereby people visit the places of memory and encounter the cultural and political stories that hegemonic historical narratives overlook. The sites of memory that students have worked on are as follows: The Locker Room, Loring Park, UMN Campus, Hmong Village, Amazon Bookstore Cooperative, and East Phillips/Little Earth neighborhood. This collective work entails digital and physical archival work, visits to and collaboration with local organizations, and contact with public audiences. The class and Minnesota Transform collaborated to digitize this memory project.
