The RIDGS Ethnic Studies Initiative supports Minnesota's educators as they prepare to integrate the new Social Studies strand appearing in Minnesota's K-12 Educational Standards: Ethnic Studies. The lesson plans featured in the project are divided into four units: Origins and Identity; Resistance and Liberation; Systems of Power and Oppression; and Transformation, Hope, Action, and Change. The lesson plans draw on sources ranging from oral histories to maps to newspaper articles to artwork, all designed to facilitate classroom conversations about key themes and questions in Ethnic Studies. The lesson plans may be used as-is by educators or modified according to instructors' and students' preferences to better fit classroom needs.
Working in collaboration with Minneapolis Public Schools teachers and faculty at the University of Minnesota, Sarah Pawlicki produced 44 highly developed curriculum packages to directly meet the most pressing needs of K-12 teachers today, as well as developing a template and process to facilitate the creation of more packages.
